FOR LADIES ONLY

Me and Kakey-boo

We are fast approaching March and soon we will be seeing temps rising and children playing outside.  I love the spring even though in SC it is very short-lived.  I was reading with Jacob some of his schoolwork the other day and in it was a story of Squanto and how he helped the Pilgrims learn the ways of planting.  In the book, he told the Pilgrims that when the oak tree leaves are the size of a mouse’s ear that you know then it is time to plant corn.  I thought I would try that this year.  So often we plant corn too late and the summer sun beats upon it ultimately ending our corn crop for the year.

I am looking forward to planting my garden.  I enjoy the harvesting, preserving, pickling…all the things that go along with gardening.  I have plans to take the kids on a field trip this April and pick some strawberries and spend a whole day with Kayla teaching her how to make preserves.  I am finding that the generation we are raising now is not going to know much about homemaking.  There is NOTHING like taking out a fresh batch of biscuits and opening up a jar of homemade strawberry jam.  Boy, my mouth is watering now thinking about it.  I wonder if the teenagers today even know that there is a difference between the two?  I remember sitting for hours on a hot July afternoon at my grandma’s table watching her stir and stir those fig preserves.  Sure wish for one day I were allowed to go back and enjoy one of those afternoons.  “So teach us to number our days,” the Scripture teaches us about how fast time does fly and how we should soak up everyday as a gift.  I am finding as my children are growing so quickly that life is short and my time will soon be over, but oh, what a day is coming that will not be able to be compared with anything down here!  I was reading a devotional the other night concerning “homesickness.”  As a Christian we know this home is just a “rental” and the permanent home is “just around the bend.”  Time is drawing to a close for this world and yet, here we sit day after day not following the Lord’s commandment to take the Gospel to all the world.  Ladies, I pray that we will be better representatives of our Lord.  Let’s make up our minds right now that as we see the day approaching, we will be more determined, more outspoken, more on fire for Him.

As spring approaches, take time to sniff the air.  Walk a little slower, soak in all the buds and flowers, and take your time to reach others for Christ!

Some of the ladies from my church and I will be attending the Dare for More Conference in Gatlinburg, TN with speaker Reba Bowman.  We are looking forward to this event.  I will write next month and let you know how much we enjoyed it.

Until Next Month,

Melissa
